  • Abstract:

Background and context: I want to focus on some emerging tools of thought in the design and production of buildings, mostly influenced by various computing technologies. They offer new possibilities, extending the scope of good design and in particular of increasing the real involvement of clients and users in the design process. The OED defines ’representation’ as ’the action of presenting to the mind or imagination an image thus presented, a clearly conceived idea or concept’. Ted Happold wrote: ’The solution is conceived as a model, initially a mental model. This is developed and communicated in a variety of ways: description, drawings, physical models (representational or form-finding) analogue models, mathematical, or computer models. It is only by developing the model into a communicable form that the concept becomes imaginable and can be evaluated.’ I want to develop this, emphasizing the idea of representing aspects of buildings and building processes both to the design team and others who will eventually use the buildings.
